  1. I would like to see more developmental goals, by player, emphasized by the leaders of our soccer teaching communities. Far too often the leaders place team goals ahead of the individual. And, truthfully, there are only a few games with team significance at the youth level. Youth games and training should be about developing players’ individual execution and decision making so that they are well prepared for the BIG games later in life. Specific player goals must be established on a case by case basis and should be implemented, examined, and reviewed seasonally and annually.

I challenge coaches to improve their approach to player development by encouraging players to exercise and explore their ability, execution, and decision making. I challenge coaches to give their players more opportunities to experience the game from different positions and game circumstances. Far too many coaches give kids “opportunities” to experience other roles when the game or practice has little significance. It has to happen when it means something.

Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “only those who try what they can not do will grow.”

We need to give our youth soccer players more and more opportunities to grow.
